Bharat Bhatia elected WG Chair to Working Party 5D

Bharat Bhatia, president ITU APT Foundation of India has been elected to chair the global group in ITU that will decide the 6G standards.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a specialized arm of the United Nations for information and communication technologies (ICTs). It facilitates international connectivity in communication networks. For that, it allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develops the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies connect seamlessly. It also strives to provide a trusted, multilateral platform to broker international agreements and standards, share knowledge, build capacity, and work with members and partners to spread access to technology around the world.

As WG Chair to Working Party 5D (WP 5D) Bhatia’s role is vast. He will oversee the general aspects and coordination of WP5D to ensure seamless, efficient, and timely progress of work items and agenda of the Working Group.

WP 5D is responsible for the overall radio system aspects of the terrestrial component of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) systems, comprising the current IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced and IMT-2020 as well as IMT for 2030 and beyond.

6G internet is the next generation wireless network technology that will succeed 5G. While 6G standards and specs have yet to be firmed up as the technology will be accessible only 6 years hence. However, there have been plenty of conversations and deliberations behind the scenes. Industry stakeholders have discussed many technical options. IAFI too has been a front runner in initiating advocacy and talks around 6G so that India is well prepared to benefit from the launch of 6G.
